Boarding at Embley opens a breadth and depth of opportunities for our committed and ambitious students.

As boarders, students can focus on achieving their academic goals while taking full advantage of our facilities and 130 acres of outdoor spaces, enjoying an extensive programme of evening and weekend activities, and building life-long and global friendships – all in a home away from home environment.

Our Boarding team help students grow in all aspects of life as they mature into caring and responsible young adults and develop their independence alongside an understanding, respect and compassion for those around them.

From Year 7, we offer full and weekly boarding for families who live a distance from Embley and flexible boarding options for local children. Embley is a member of the British Boarding Association (BSA), an organisation overseeing boarding schools in 37 countries.

Boarding house

Located at the heart of our school, the Manor House accommodates 70 students in a friendly and bustling boarding house. It’s an impressive and historic building, where boarders enjoy amazing views across the school’s 130-acre estate which turns into their back garden at evenings and weekends and includes a nine-hole golf course, tennis courts, woodland and parkland.

Types of boarding

Full Boarding

Students live together as one family, seven days a week. After a busy and productive week, boarders enjoy time to relax and reflect, and take part in a weekend programme with the boarding family that is full of cultural, fun and exciting activities and trips – and usually a spot of shopping!

Weekly Boarding

This is perfect for busy families or for students with a long daily commute. Weekly boarders enjoy all the benefits of full boarding and its wrap-around care - a more relaxed start to the day, supervised prep in the evenings, a full range of evening activities and use of the school’s facilities - and return home for weekends to be with their family and local friends.

Flexi Boarding

Flexi boarders have their own bed and dedicated space in the house where they can leave their possessions when not staying overnight. This option helps enormously with those involved in school activities that require an early start or late night - such as sailing commitments, music or drama rehearsals - or to break up the bus journey to and from school.

Evenings

Having completed a full day of study and co-curricular activities, boarders return to the boarding house to change and relax before dinner together. Once supervised prep is complete, they enjoy a range of evening activities which can include baking; board and card games; and arts and crafts.

For the more energetic, there are regular sports activities in our sports hall and gym, students can use the tennis courts and golf course. We welcome day students to spend time with their friends in boarding; inviting them on weekend trips or to our boarders’ birthday parties.

Weekends

We are lucky to be surrounded by the perfect blend of city, coast and country and the school is within easy reach of many places that are steeped in history and academic interest. Saturdays often involve a shopping trip to Southampton or Winchester.

On Sundays, boarders enjoy activities such as swimming, the cinema, trampoline park, horse riding, laser tag, paint balling or paddle boarding. We also arrange trips to places of historical interest such as Stonehenge, Bath or Oxford or to attractions such as Harry Potter World. Embley does not offer exeats.
