The Embley Pupil Compass

Navigators in a sea of change

The Embley Pupil Profile Compass is designed to guide and support every child’s journey in a challenging and ever-changing world. Rooted in our commitment to providing an education that prepares children for their futures, the Compass outlines 12 core skills and behaviours that underpin a meaningful, authentic and successful life. These qualities form the foundation of our mission: to make the world a better place through the formation of children who are ambitious and compassionate individuals with a grounded confidence in who they are and what they can become.

The word compass is drawn from the Latin com (together) and passus (step), which when combined means journey together. We scaffold a set of skills and develop quality of character in our pupils as part of their academic and personal development; the better to form navigators equipped with a compass that guides their journey through the challenges and opportunities of a complex, ever changing and dynamic world.

Through this shared journey, we empower children not only to find their way, but to lead with purpose and integrity.

Adaptable

The ability to adapt to change, explore new approaches and show respect for others is essential in every aspect of life. By encouraging pupils to learn from their successes and their mistakes, they come to value every experience for the role it plays in shaping who they are – and who they can become.

Caring

All pupils are encouraged to be outward-looking, recognising that the world extends far beyond themselves. Through empathy, service and the human connections they make, our pupils discover that the greatest happiness often comes from making a positive difference to others.

Confident

Confidence empowers our pupils to believe in themselves and their potential for success. It drives them to make a positive different. We nurture a sense of purpose, humour and self-belief, balanced with the humility to know that there is always room to grow.

Creator

In a rapidly changing world, the ability to think creatively and critically is essential. We start building these skills early on, providing our pupils with authentic, real-world experiences that develop innovative thinking, problem solving and intellectual agility.

Knowledgeable

The acquisition of knowledge empowers individuals to make informed decisions and grasp complex ideas. We encourage children to be curious about the world, making connections between ideas, asking thoughtful questions and exploring how things work and why they matter. They grow into lifelong learners, always open to discovering more.

Leader

Leadership isn’t just about being in charge, it’s about having the confidence, responsibility and vision to inspire and motivate others towards positive change. We provide pupils with the chance to lead by example in a variety of ways, so they grow into confident, thoughtful and compassionate leaders.

Open minded

Being open minded is an essential skill in today’s rapidly changing world. We encourage children to actively engage with diverse perspectives different worldviews. Through these experiences, they develop their curiosity and learn to reflect and grow a thoughtful understanding of their own values and cultures - as well as those of others.

Principled

Being principled means striving to live and work to your best. We create a culture where pupils learn to take ownership of their actions and act with honesty and integrity, recognising that how we treat people defines who we are.

Problem solver

Being able to analyse, evaluate and develop solutions to complex issues is closely tied to broader thinking skills such as critical thinking, creativity and analytical reasoning. We help pupils to develop these skills, encouraging them to apply their reasoning with initiative and versatility to solve tasks.

Reflective

Being reflective is crucial to personal and academic growth. We guide our pupils in drawing meaning from their experiences, encouraging honesty about their strengths and weaknesses, as well as those around them, as they strive to become the best version of themselves.

Risk taker

Taking risks fosters personal growth by building confidence, resilience and resourcefulness, while also leading to a greater sense of accomplishment. We encourage pupils to step outside their comfort zones, to embrace challenges that push them to feel purposefully uncomfortable as they stretch and grow themselves.

Team player

Belonging to a strong community gives pupils a sense of connection, support and shared purpose. As active team players across all areas of school life, our pupils are encouraged to collaborate, communicate and contribute meaningfully. In doing so, they develop confidence, competence and creativity while learning to listen to, respect and value the perspectives of others.
