Our creative curriculum is an integral part of every child’s learning experience as they develop fundamental skills of expression, confidence, collaboration and self-discipline. Art, Drama and Music also form part of our co-curriculum, with inspiration often coming from our collabroations with Embley Senior School and Sixth Form students.
Art
Your child will learn about Art from an artist’s perspective in our purpose-built art studio, which is always a hub of activity.
Exploring the use of mixed media, schemes of work include making clay tiles in the style of William Morris, studying perspective to create Lowry-style paintings and exploring pop art and onomatopoeic explosions to create comic book style paintings in the style of Roy Lichtenstein. The children get hands-on in our workshop with Design & Technology tools as they design and complete their design projects, ranging from creating matchstick pyramids to understand structure and height or constructing battery-powered mini kit cars.
Beyond the classroom, we offer a whole host of creative co-curricular activities including pottery, arts and crafts, chocolate making, embroidery and creativity club.
Drama
Drama at Embley immerses children into more experiential learning, with improvisations in class around themed topics and texts which complement our English curriculum.
Working with our Director of Drama and specialist Drama teachers, the children have the opportunity to take part in productions such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Aladdin, our annual Summer Year 6 production and a range of drama workshops with visiting artists. Our co-curricular activities include drama clubs, ballet and dance.
Music
Learning music brings a whole host of important benefits including coordination, pattern recognition, memory skills, confidence and perseverance.
Children from Nursery age have a dedicated music lesson each week, taught by one of our music teachers. Our special relationship with Romsey Abbey is an integral part of school life, with children participating in choral workshops with the Abbey’s Director of Music and performances in the Abbey.
Half of our Prep children elect to learn an instrument with one of our many expert peripatetic music tutors, including wind, string and brass instruments, as well as electric and acoustic guitar, drums, piano and singing. They also enjoy our many music groups including school choirs, orchestra along with recorder, guitar and ukulele group and perform at our Prep Recitals. Children are regularly entered for Associated Board of Music, Trinity and Rock School exams.
Arts Award
Our Embley Arts Award offers a broad range of opportunities and benefits to our children.
This pupil-led award helps children to establish and grow skills in the performing arts (with a choice of completing the award via Art, Music, or Drama). But in addition to completing a performance, they can build a much broader range of essential skills, including organisation, leadership, planning and teaching.
The Arts Award runs at different grade levels, so your child can progress through the programme during their time at Embley.
