PREP SCHOOL

Academic

Prep and Senior School teachers work closely together to deliver our whole school curriculum, with our teacher-led enquiry approach to learning, as part of the Embley Thinking Curriculum, providing a continuous thread that builds with the children as they move through the school.Children of all ages often come together for shared learning experiences including our whole-school weeks celebrating areas such as literature, poetry and wellbeing.

Up to Year 2, lessons are mainly taught by primary years specialists with subject specialists, who often work across our Prep and Senior Schools, teaching French, Music and Sport. As your child progresses through Prep, they will be increasingly taught by specialist teachers across all subjects, utilising our Science Lab, DT Workshop, Art Studio and Computer Science Hub. Children learn French from Nursery and Spanish from Year 5.

ENGLISH & MATHS

We have a strong reading culture and appreciation of books, with two inspiring libraries for the children.

English is driven by engaging texts and children write in a range of styles. Drama lessons are often inter-linked to our English curriculum, helping children to become confident in front of audiences; be it a school production, assembly or public speaking competition. Our popular Book Club, Film Club and the Embley Eagle Newspaper Club enable children to pursue their interests in creative writing outside of the curriculum.

Maths at Embley is as much about depth of thought and problem solving as it is developing the foundations of knowledge. By building confidence to tackle new challenges, children learn the thinking skills to apply their knowledge in unfamiliar situations. Learning is extended beyond the curriculum through our Maths Club, which sees Senior School students mentoring the younger years, and our Minecraft Education Club where problem solving and systems thinking is developed through play.

SCIENCES

We place great emphasis on both the practical and theoretical in Science, with Marine Biology taught in Year 6 which includes regular fieldtrips on our keelboats in the Solent to source specimens to study in the classroom.

Our Natural Science curriculum has cross curricular links with Science and Geography. We investigate meteorology, astronomy and sustainability and make the most of our extensive grounds. We conduct environmental surveys and use scientific skills to create new habitats, homes and food for the invertebrate and bird species observed.

Through these lessons, your child will gain a greater understanding and appreciation of how the world works and the part we can all play in caring for it. Our ‘Wild Ones’ club sees children learning new skills in our classroom in the woods and STEM and Construction Club sees our pioneering young engineers at work.

HUMANITIES

Humanities cross into many aspects of our curriculum to allow for a greater understanding of our world.

In Geography, the children learn about primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary industries, how they generate jobs, influence global trade and are influenced by government policy. Geography and Science combine through real world important issues with a focus on biodiversity, distribution of natural resources, climate change and living sustainably, linking to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

In History, we look at the past, how this has influenced our present and may impact our futures by learning in sequence. For example, Year 6 learn about power, empire and democracy, starting with  the growth and decline of the British Empire before moving onto migration and life as a migrant, the civil rights movement and how these periods of time compare to how we live today. Children approach challenging, historically-valued questions by learning to think, read and study like a historian, learning about change, cause, similarity and significance of the world which has lived before them.  And from Year 1 to 6, Religious Studies are divided into the topic areas of faith, theology, and religion and world views.
