Data collection at the Olympic Park

GCSE geographers travelled to the capital this week on a field trip to investigate the success of an urban regeneration project. Their destination was Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, East London to see first-hand how the human landscape has been transformed.

The park was purpose-built for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics and contains the Olympic stadium (now known as the London Stadium and home to West Ham Football Club) and the Aquatics Centre and Velodrome. The park is overlooked by the ArcelorMittal Orbit, an observation tower and Britain's largest piece of public art.

Year 11 students were tasked to complete data collection investigating the opportunities created by the regeneration which included an environmental quality survey, pedestrian counts and questionnaires. This forms part of their assessment for their GCSE Geography exam during which they answer questions relating to their fieldwork projects in both physical and human environments.

The weather was beautiful and had bought plenty of visitors into the park which enabled students to collect really valuable data whilst revising a key case study at the same time.
