After a 30-hour journey, students from Years 9–12 arrived in Cusco, Peru, ready to begin their South American expedition.
Their first full day was spent exploring Cusco’s rich history, including visits to Coricancha (the Temple of the Sun), the fortress of Sacsayhuamán and the city’s cathedral, all significant sites reflecting the legacy of the Inca civilisation.
The group then travelled through the Andes to Huayopata, where they learned about Fairtrade coffee and cacao production and had the opportunity to make their own coffee and chocolate. They spent the night with local families in the jungle and the following morning, explored a cacao farm to discover more about the region’s agricultural produce.
Next, students undertook a four-hour trek through the Amazon rainforest to Aguas Calientes.
A highlight of the trip followed with a visit to Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. During a guided tour, they learned about the site's history and significance while taking in its remarkable setting.
Students also enjoyed a cycling excursion through the Andes, offering a unique way to experience the dramatic landscape and traditional villages. On the penultimate day, the focus turned to Peruvian cuisine. Following a short language lesson, students visited San Pedro Market to source fresh local ingredients before taking part in a cookery class, where they prepared and sampled traditional dishes.
The final day began with a 4am start for a mountain trek to Humantay Lake, a stunning glacial lake situated 4,200 metres above sea level, providing a memorable conclusion to an unforgettable trip.
