Science in Action

Year 10 attended 'Science in Action' at the Emmanuel Centre in London. The inspiring day covered a wide range of cutting-edge scientific topics through expert-led talks and live experiments.

Students investigated space science with Dr Emma Chapman who opened the event by transporting students to distant worlds, including a planet where it rains glass. Leah Morgan then introduced the audience to fusion energy and explained why the night sky is mostly made of plasma.

Tom Warrender’s Human Guinea Pig Show bought science closer to home with an exploration of NHS career pathways and live demonstrations. It was great to see our students actively participate throughout the day. Betsy took part in an on-stage demonstration with an infra-red vein finder and Alex’s question about the role of chemistry and physics in healthcare careers prompted an intriguing discussion.

The day ended with a trip to the Amazon rainforest with Greg Foot as students explored jaguar tracking, clay-licking macaws and the use of artificial intelligence in recognising monkey calls. The event gave students the chance to explore real world applications of scientific developments beyond the classroom and it was great to see them return to school with a renewed sense of curiosity and wonder.
