Scholars lecture series

Our Scholars lecture series is well underway this half term. Over the last few weeks we have welcomed renowned architect Kim Wilkie CBE, computer scientist and education theorist Professor Mitra, and award-winning academic Dr Fiona Aubrey-Smith to Embley.

Kim Wilkie, who received a CBE this year for his contribution to architecture, spoke to our students on 'Led by the Land’. Kim explored how the shape of the land and patterns of water determine where structures are built, where we grow food and how we can adapt to live with the natural world in a changing climate.

Professor Mitra gained international attention through his famous ‘Hole in the Wall’ experiment, where he placed a computer in a Delhi slum and discovered that children could teach themselves how to use it. Professor Mitra explored 'What comes next?' in a thought-provoking session that explores how the ideas, influence and learning outlast us and what this means for how we live and learn today.

Dr Fiona Aubrey-Smith, named as one of the Top 5 Visionary Women in Education in 2024 and EduFuturist of the year in 2025, is the Founder of PedTech and Director of One Life Learning. Dr Aubrey-Smith spoke to our students about the research cycle, offering invaluable advice and practical guidance to support them in completing their scholars projects.
