Embley Wellbeing Week

Embley Wellbeing Week took place w/c 10 February. Pupils across the school enjoyed workshops, talks, experiences and activities centred around the NHS’s five steps to wellbeing: connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and give.

Highlights of Wellbeing Week at Prep:

  • Friendship and Interpersonal Skills: Year 5 and 6 took part in a workshop with Alicia Drummond, (BACP accredited therapist and founder of Teen Tips and The Wellbeing Hub). Pupils reflected on what they learnt in the workshop, presenting their knew knowledge to Year 3 and 4 at the end of the week.
  • Life, the universe and everything: Year 3 to 6 explored space in a physics workshop run by students from Southampton University. The children learnt how to classify auroras, and using images from the ASK camera system in the high Arctic to identify shapes and patterns, they also created their own aurora artworks. Year 5 and 6 explored the night sky, space shuttles and constellations before designing their own telescopes.
  • Worry monsters: Pupils were encouraged to be open about their worries through creating ‘worry monster finger puppets’.
  • Story time with Miss Wright: Nursery, Reception and Year 1 enjoyed story time with our Head of Prep, Miss Wright, in the Woodland Library, exploring some of her favourite books.
  • First aid for my teddy: Year 1 and 2 learnt crucial first aid skills with the help of their teddies in a session run by our resident matron, Helen Gale. The children learnt how to correctly use plasters, bandages and how to put someone in the recovery position.

Highlights of Embley Wellbeing Week at Senior:

  • Friendships: Alicia Drummond spoke to Year 7 to 9 about what makes friendship groups work, how to view friendship issues with perspective and resolve fallouts.
  • Time to fly: Sixth Form students explored what makes a successful life with Alicia Drummond (BACP accredited therapist and founder of Teen Tips and The Wellbeing Hub). They considered life after school, the mindset and habits of successful people and the importance of taking responsibility for your own decisions and choices.
  • Smoothie bikes and taste testing: Students learnt more about food waste with the help of smoothie bikes. They also had the opportunity to try brain energy balls, full of fibre, protein, iron and vitamins, which contribute to psychological and cognitive function.
  • Managing the stresses of life: Year 10 and 11 students had a session with Alicia Drummond which provided top tips on promoting self-awareness and self-management to increase emotional resilience.
  • Trashion show: Students created imaginative and innovative runway looks using recycled materials.

Across the school, pupils also had the opportunity to take part in a variety of other activities including yoga sessions, mindfulness crafts, DT workshops and photo challenges. They were also encouraged to engage in random acts of kindness, no matter how small. The event was a great way to end the half term and reminded us how important it is to look after our own wellbeing and that of others.
