Colourful chemistry with Year 7

Year 7 investigated chemical opposites by creating their own natural pH indicator.

Students learned about everyday examples of acids before conducting their own experiment. Using boiling water and a filter, students extracted the pigment from red cabbage to create their indicator. They then spot tested two chemicals - hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide, with a pipette filled with their indicator solution. Year 7 observed and recorded the colour change each chemical produced and identified whether they were alkali or acid. This experiment was an engaging way to build students’ laboratory skills and deepen their understanding of the pH scale.
