Celebrating British Science Week

Embley Prep celebrated British Science Week by investigating this year’s theme of ‘Change & Adapt’. Across the week, pupils explored a range of topics including how the human body adapts to viruses, animal adaptations and changing seasons. Some of the highlights include:

  • Using VR headsets, Reception to Year 6 went on an immersive underwater voyage exploring coral reefs, jellyfish and whale sharks up close in a fascinating journey of discovery. They learnt more about animal classifications, life cycles, food webs and the unique adaptations of marine life.
  • Dr Reed, Embley’s Marine Biologist, complemented this workshop with a whole school assembly and sessions on marine life adaptations and Antarctic exploration.
  • Rangers from New Forest National Park Authority ran a hands-on session about our local habitats. The children discovered how changing environments impact native animals and how they have adapted to thrive in local nature reserves and national parks.
  • Change and adaptation does not only happen on Earth, so we welcomed back the University of Southampton to lead a range of intruiging physics workshops. Pupils designed space telescopes, explored the scale of the solar system and investigated the history of the Apollo Space Programme. The children considered how technology has evolved throughout history and how scientists have responded to these changes.
  • Pupils had their ‘I wonder…’ box questions answered daily by engineers from Hamiltonian Dynamics and engaged in ‘BIG SCIENCE’ every lunchtime with guests from Embley Senior School and the University of Southampton.

Pupils also used their knowledge from across the week to design a poster for BSW’s national competition. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and engagement from the children as they explored a range of topics to support our curriculum and build their appreciation of the world.
