Arts award theatre trip

Students in Year 7 to 9 recently embarked on an exciting trip to see Into the Woods at the Bridge Theatre as part of their Arts Award. They are currently completing either their Bronze or Silver Arts Award, a nationally recognised qualification which seeks to develop students' skills in the arts.

The Arts Award covers a wide range of components including: developing a practical skill, completing research into Arts career pathways, reviewing Arts events and sharing their skills with others. Bronze award students have recently been teaching Prep students through a series of Drama, Dance and Art workshops to complete the 'sharing their skills with others' component, whilst our Silver award students have created a performance which Year 5 and 6 Prep Arts Award students will perform to our Nursery.

Part of the Arts Award also requires students to review a live Arts event and Into the Woods proved to be the perfect subject as it uses creative design choices to immerse the audience in a fantastical world. Our students share their first thoughts and impressions of the production:

  • "The show was absolutely fantastic! I loved the set design and the trees were so detailed, and the way that they changed from full to broken because of the giant was very cool. Also, the scene where they were in the house was amazing, and made the story easy to follow without being too gory. Furthermore, when the lighting went flashy and boomed because of the giant I think it set the atmosphere very well, and gave us the right amount of terror without being terrifying." Mia (Year 8)
  • "The show was absolutely amazing! The lighting was incredible! They used haze effects, to show thunder and flashes to show lightning it was truly spectacular. Also, the lighting really made the show come to life. I was blown away by everything, it was fantastic." Georgia (Year 8)
  • "The show was amazing and all the vocals were astonishing and interesting. How the actors told the story through song entirely was truly incredible." Kittie (Year 8)
  • "The show was captivating and interesting to watch. We watch these shows to help complete our Arts Award and we have to write a review about it, I already know it will be a positive one from me!" Anna (Year 8)

Watching, analysing and then reviewing the show provides a valuable opportunity for our students to deepen their understanding of design, performance and stagecraft - we look forward to their upcoming reviews!
