We were delighted to welcome Paul Brandford, tutor at the Royal Academy of Arts and award-winning artist, to Embley to lead a ‘Drawing into Painting’ workshop for our talented Art scholars and A Level students.

Using examples of his own paintings, Paul encouraged our students to be brave in their creative decisions, explore new possibilities and to take risks as they delved deeper into the relationship between drawing and painting. Beginning in monochrome, students took part in a series of quick tasks replicating paintings from portraits to still life. They were asked to think beyond the idea of drawing and colouring as separate actions. They grew in confidence throughout the day as they learnt more about working with different tools, surfaces and brush techniques. While students found themselves outside of their comfort zones and experimenting with new techniques, it was rewarding for them to see how their skills developed across their collection of pieces at the end of the day.
