Taking to the slopes in Italy

During February half term, 61 Senior School and Sixth Form students embarked on Embley’s annual ski trip. The destination for 2024 was the fabulous resort of Sestriere, Italy. The snow had fallen heavily before arrival and just about lasted the entire week.

Students were thrilled to be able to ski the ‘Milky Way’, a vast area of the Alps that was home of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. Armed with passes that allowed access into both the Italian and French areas of the resort, the trip proved to be an opportunity not to be missed!

Sestriere provides skiing for all abilities and the vast 440km of piste ensures that beginners can learn key skills with confidence before they progress onto the more challenging slopes and with up to five hours tuition each day, students on the trip made significant improvements. By the end of the week, beginner groups progressed and began learning parallel turns, whilst students in the more advanced groups were learning new skills on the black slopes, or carving the snow off-piste at the coaching of their instructors.

In the evenings, they all whiled away their time with pizza, ice skating, tobogganing and the occasional shopping night. There was also ample time for everyone to relax and socialise whilst recounting their adventures on the slopes. Students enjoyed a vast array of Italian food in the hotel and each evening finished this with the day’s student awards, achievements, blunders and impressive falls – some involving stalling ski lifts themselves!
