A wild week at Embley Prep
It has been a wild week at Embley Prep as we welcomed a new resident to the Science Lab and our Environmental Club put their knowledge to the test in an animal rescue!
The children were excited to welcome Loki the corn snake to our Prep Science Lab. Loki is a species native to the USA commonly found in overgrown fields, forests or disused buildings. The children were fascinated to learn more about corn snakes, their natural habitats and how important enrichment is to their wellbeing. Pupils had the opportunity to handle Loki and were captivated by his behaviour and the smooth, silky texture of his scales. They also discovered how corn snakes like to hide as he investigated a pencil case! Loki is settling in and pupils will continue to have the chance to visit and observe him.
In Natural Sciences 'Operation Save Tink' took over as the Prep had an unexpected visit from a lost toad who sought refuge in the foyer! Clearly a long way from home, the toad was bought to the Science Lab for safety. Pupils researched how to care for their visitor and what was required in the environment to keep the toad happy and healthy. The children then presented their findings to Mrs Roe and put their knowledge to the test in creating a mini habitat. They visited the woods to collect moss, leaf litter and twigs. The toad spent time recuperating in the dark, damp and mossy home the children had built. Later, our Environmental Club members released Tink safely back into the woods, where they hoped he would find his way back home.
Year 5 also gained valuable insight into their Spring term science unit, life cycles, after discovering the first of our stick insect eggs had hatched! Previously, the children have observed the stick insects shedding, laying eggs and moving through the later stages of the life cycle. The children were intrigued to see how quickly the baby stick insect moved and immediately began to work out how we can best look after such a tiny insect!
