At Embley, we are inspired by our most famous resident, Florence Nightingale, who was herself a fantastically skilled Mathematician and her sheer determination changed society as we know it.
Last year, some of our talented Senior School students started to follow in her footsteps when they began mentoring pupils from our Prep School in Mathematics, guiding them through the subject and finding ways to encourage and challenge them in an engaging way, helping them to learn and gain confidence along the way. After a successful two terms, our mentoring programme continues this week with a brand-new set of students mentoring our younger pupils.
In his introduction to the session, Rob Clare, Head of Mathematicss, told the Prep pupils: “These sessions are all about having fun with somebody who can also help you with your Maths, whilst building lasting relationships with other students of different ages.”
One Senior School student remarked, “I really love helping people and it’s great that they will improve from the sessions. It also helps towards my Duke of Edinburgh award as one of my volunteering points, so that’s a bonus!”
The sessions are proving popular with a brilliant uptake in registrations for the sessions. This term we have 20 pupils and equal mentors.
